T.N. govt. sanctions ₹289.63-crore relief for crop damage

The Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday issued an order sanctioning ₹289.63 crore from the State Disaster Response Fund as relief for the crops damaged on 5.66 lakh acres due to rain during the northeast monsoon in November and December 2024, and unseasonal rain in January 2025.

In a press release, Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare M.R.K. Panneerselvam said revenue and agriculture officials had conducted field assessments in the affected districts. After confirming crop damage of over 33%, proposals seeking relief were obtained from the Collectors concerned and examined.

Based on the assessment, the extent of crop damage was estimated at 4.90 lakh acres for agricultural crops, and 76,132 acres for horticultural crops. Based on the estimates, ₹289.63 crore had been sanctioned as relief for 3.60 lakh farmers. The amount will be credited to the bank accounts of the farmers, the Minister added.
