At least 19 passengers were injured when a private bus overturned near Kuthalam in Mayiladuthurai district on Friday.
The bus proceeding from Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district to Karaikal was carrying over 30 passengers at the time of accident.
According to the police, the driver lost control of the bus near the Nattar canal close to Ayyanarkudi village in Kuthalam taluk. The bus first rammed an electric pole and a few two-wheelers parked along the roadside before overturning.
In all, 19 passengers were injured and were rushed to the Government Hospital in Mayiladuthurai for treatment. Of them, five suffered serious injuries. A few others were shifted to the Government Hospital in Kumbakonam.
Personnel from the Palaiyur police station rushed to the spot and carried out rescue operations. A case has been registered, and efforts are under way to trace the bus driver, who fled the spot.
Mayiladuthurai Superintendent of Police G. Stalin visited the accident site.
