The Tolichowki police arrested five members of a gang for allegedly extorting money from a man by threatening to circulate a private video on social media. One accused is absconding, and efforts are on to trace him.

The arrested accused were identified as 23-year-old Mohd Muzamil, 22-year-old Mohd Imran Ahmed, 22-year-old Mohd Shanawaz, 22-year-old Quizar Hussain and 22-year-old Shaik Amir Ahmed, all residents of Akbarpura in Tolichowki. The absconding accused was identified as Mohd Sadik.

According to the police, the case came to light following a complaint lodged on December 26 by 32-year-old Junaid Makhdoomi, an Amazon employee residing in Gowlidoddi. The complainant stated that on the night of December 21, while he visited a female friend at Akbarpura to collect his laptop, a group of four persons forcibly entered the house claiming to be society members. They allegedly recorded videos of the complainant and his friend on a mobile phone and accused them of misconduct.

The gang later threatened to circulate the videos on social media and file police complaints unless money was paid. Acting under fear, the complainant was allegedly forced to transfer ₹46,000 to the bank account of one of the accused.

Based on information gathered during the investigation, the police apprehended the accused at Tolichowki crossroads around midnight on December 27. During questioning, the accused reportedly confessed to the offence and stated that the extorted amount was spent during a trip to Sangareddy.

Four mobile phones were seized from the possession of the arrested accused. They were produced before the XVII Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate at Nampally and remanded to judicial custody.
