Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K. Selvaperunthagai on Monday (December 29, 2025) termed Congress functionary Praveen Chakravarty’s remarks on Tamil Nadu’s debt levels “unacceptable” and said they were made to “create confusion in the INDIA bloc.”
Mr. Chakravarty, who heads the All India Professionals’ Congress and the Indian National Congress’s Data Analytics Department, on Sunday (December 28) disputed the claim of the DMK’s Parliamentary party leader Kanimozhi, that the M.K. Stalin government had transformed the debt-burdened Tamil Nadu into a developed State. He further claimed that Tamil Nadu “has the highest outstanding debt” among all States.

Speaking to reporters at Satyamurthy Bhavan, the TNCC headquarters, Mr. Selvaperunthagai said he has raised a complaint with the All India Congress Committee (AICC) president regarding the statement.
He said Mr. Chakravarty’s remarks did not represent the official stance of the TNCC. “Only remarks made by me, All India Congress Committee Tamil Nadu in-charge Girish Chodankar, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, and party leader Rahul Gandhi are official ones,” Mr. Selvaperunthagai said.
He said the statistics provided by Mr. Chakravarty were “distorted” and that the DMK government has managed the State’s finances well. “The Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu regimes cannot be compared. It is unfair. The State’s borrowing capacity increases as per its State GSDP growth. Congressmen will never back the BJP and RSS. This is a misuse Rahul Gandhi’s name,” Mr. Selvaperunthagai said.

Alliance in T.N.
Mr. Selvaperunthagai said that a decision on the alliance will be taken by the national leadership. He added that the INDIA bloc is strong, and that seat-sharing talks are under way and will conclude in a satisfactory manner. “We never attempt any back-door entry,” Mr. Selvaperunthagai remarked.
“Some people are attempting to help the BJP enter Tamil Nadu by working both directly and indirectly. We won’t allow this, whether it is within our party or outside,” he said.

On the issue of sharing of power, he said people are expressing their wishes, and this cannot be interpreted as putting pressure on anyone.
