A large number of women accompanied with children and men, blocked the busy Dindigul-Tiruchi national highway near Uzhavar Sandhai demanding the authorities to supply potable water on Monday.
The public, who were from Balakrishnapuram Municipality area, said that for almost two months, potable water was not distributed in their locality and in Renganathapuram, CTO Colony and surrounding places. Under some pretext or the other, the municipal authorities gave lame excuses.
Many residents were forced to purchase water from private sources, they said and added that petitions at the Collectorate on Mondays during grievance meetings had not fetched any results. Hence, they decided to stage the agitation.
The womenfolk said that they would not leave the place and even threatened to court arrest and demanded water supply immediately.
The Dindigul Taluk police and the revenue officials from the Balakrishnapuram municipality assured to take action at the earliest and said that the issue would be permanently sorted out within a week following which they dispersed.
The traffic police said that vehicles were diverted for about an hour and after the road blockade was withdrawn, normalcy prevailed on the stretch.
