A case has been registered against Basavakalyan BJP MLA Sharanu Salagar on the charge of failing to repay a loan of ₹99 lakh taken from his distant relatives during the 2023 Assembly elections.
A complaint has been filed by Sanjukumar Sugure, a resident of Jai Shankar Colony in Basavakalyan in this connection.
Acting on the directions of an Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) in Bengaluru, the Basavakalyan police registered the case on Saturday.
According to the complaint, Mr. Salagar borrowed ₹99 lakh as loan between January 2023 and February 2023 when he was contesting the Assembly elections.
The MLA reportedly assured the complainant that the loan amount will be repaid within six months. However, the complainant has said that the money has not been returned even after two-and-a-half years.
Mr. Sugure has stated that he has lent [before the disputed loan] money to Mr. Salagar on several occasions in the past which has been repaid.
“Based on that trust, I extended financial help and also, because he is a distant relative of mine,” the complainant said.
The complainant further said that after repeated demands for repayment, a meeting was held on September 14, 2025 in the presence of family members, during which Mr. Salagar agreed to return the amount and issued a cheque.
However, when the cheque was deposited, it was dishonoured as the bank account of the legislator was closed, he said.
Mr. Sugure also accused Mr. Salagar of abusing and threatening his wife and son when they visited his house seeking repayment of the money. The complainant has said that the MLA has acted with an intention to cheat him.
A case has been registered at the Basavakalyan Police Station. Investigation is under way, the police said.
