Coimbatore figures among three major cities (along with Chennai and Ernakulam) identified in Southern Railway for doubling train capacities in the next five years. The current infrastructure will be augmented with additional platforms, stabling lines, pit lines and adequate shunting facilities.

Expansion of coaching terminals and enhancement of sectional and operational capacities will be carried out, Union Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw has assured.

Redevelopment of Coimbatore Junction has been planned under Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode at an estimated cost of ₹ 692.65 crore and a Detailed Project Report(DPR) has been submitted to the Railway Board, according to a press release.

Railways has cleared the project for doubling the 11-km Irugur-Podanur track, to ease congestion, segregate suburban and long-distance traffic, and substantially improve punctuality and capacity.

As part of the action plan that includes identifying and creating new terminals in and around the urban area, the Railways has proposed to develop Podanur Junction at an overall investment of ₹100 crore as Coimbatore’s second terminal to reduce load on Coimbatore Junction.

Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, station redevelopment works costing about ₹24 crore are under way at Podanur Junction, covering platform improvements and enhanced passenger amenities.

Coimbatore North is also undergoing Amrit Bharat Station Upgrade, at an estimated cost of ₹11.5 crore. The key works include new entry and exit points for improved accessibility, upgraded station building, booking counters, waiting halls and passenger amenities.

The redevelopment works also encompass enlargement of circulating area, parking facilities and pedestrian access, to transform Coimbatore North into a stronger Satellite Station for Coimbatore Junction, the press release said.
