The police in the district have stepped up their preparations to curb incidents linked to New Year celebrations. They have formed a special force to maintain law and order on New Year’s eve on Wednesday.

Under the leadership of District Police Superintendent Ajit Kumar, a 1,500-member police force will be on high alert on Wednesday night. The deployment includes six DySPs, 28 inspectors, 145 sub-inspectors, 1,225 civil police officers and 92 women police personnel.

According to police sources, special squads will keep a close watch on individuals involved in anti-social activities and take action to prevent drug use and alcohol consumption in public places. Routine vehicle checks will also be carried out, and security along the district borders will be strengthened.

The police will keep a close watch on New Year DJ parties held at tourist spots, clubs, hotels and restaurants. The police said that crackdowns on drugs would be intensified and if any drug use is detected, the party organisers would also face legal action.

The police said that action would be taken against people bursting firecrackers on roads and other public spaces as well as those writing graffiti on streets. Violators of microphone regulations and firecracker rules will also face legal action.

Mr. Ajit Kumar said that all bars in the district must close by 11 p.m. and that New Year celebrations should conclude by the same time.
