CPI (M) state secretary P. Shanmugam on Thursday urged the State Government to convene a tripartite meeting involving broiler chicken farmers, poultry companies, and the Animal Husbandry Department to ensure fair wages for farmers.
In a statement issued, he said poultry farmers across the State were demanding an increase in rearing costs, and their ongoing struggle had led to a rise in chicken prices in the markets.
He noted that the last tripartite meeting was held in September 2013, following which the rearing cost was increased by 15 per cent in 2013 and by a further 5 per cent in 2014. “The Government should immediately arrange a meeting to resolve the crisis,” he said.
