Tailoring shop initiative equips women prisoners with key skills

The Tiruchi Special Prison for Women, in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Tiruchi Zone, CII Foundation, and Titan Industries, opened the ‘Freedom Tailoring Shop’ on Friday.

The initiative is aimed at equipping inmates with professional skills and a sustainable source of income to support their families and future livelihoods.

According to an official CII press release, the project’s inauguration ceremony was attended by D. Pazhani, DIG of Prisons, and Ajay Jayaraj, chairman, CII Tiruchi Zone and CEO of Jayaraj Group.

After completing a six-month intensive tailoring training, the prisoners were not only producing high-quality garments but also participating in a “Train the Trainer” model to mentor their peers, said the release. A portion of the sale proceeds from the shop is sent to the families of the inmate-tailors.

“These women are not just learning a trade; they are becoming entrepreneurs,” said Mr. Jayaraj. “By the time they complete their sentence, they will possess the technical and business skills necessary to integrate back into society as productive citizens,” he said.

V. Rukmani Priyadarshini, Superintendent of the Women’s Prison, has proposed expanding the curriculum. Future modules would include advanced techniques such as appliqué work to increase product value, alongside comprehensive training in financial management and business development.

Mr. Pazhani highlighted the broader vision of the department, noting that the Police Welfare Department offered specific schemes to provide financial assistance to inmates to start their own businesses after their release.

The project is led by Titan Industries, Bengaluru, as part of their corporate social responsibility commitment, with strategic support from the CII Foundation.
