The Tamil Nadu Lokayukta member V. Ramaraj, on Saturday (January 24, 2026) urged the government to set up commissions at the State and National level to help road accident victims.
A one-day workshop on Contemporary Issues in Indian Criminal Laws was conducted at the Government Law College in Namakkal on Saturday and Mr. Ramaraj was the chief guest.
In his inaugural address, Mr. Ramaraj said that the two main objectives of criminal laws is to register cases against the accused and to conduct a fair trial and provide justice to the victims of the crimes. “Justice provided to the accused as well as victims is like two sides of the same coin,” he said. Mr. Ramaraj stated that the Indian Criminal Laws has given detailed explanations on the steps that should be taken by the police when a crime is committed, the investigation procedure in the court, and the rights of the accused and offenders. However, there are no sufficient laws to help the victims of the crimes.
He added that, on November 29, 1985, the United Nations formulated the basic principles for victims who are affected by the crimes and abuse of powers, post which, some countries enacted laws to help the victims of all crimes. “There is a need for a suitable law to register cases and provide legal, medical, psychological, and financial assistance to the victims of all types of crimes. This will strengthen the justice system, which is a contemporary necessity in criminal administration,” he said..
Stating that every year, more people are killed and injured in road accidents in India compared to World War II, Mr. Ramaraj said that the government shall take over the task of obtaining compensation for accident victims from the insurance companies, he added.
