Claiming that equal emphasis has been laid on development work along with implementation of the guarantee schemes by the government of Karnataka, Minister in charge of Mysuru district H. C. Mahadevappa said projects worth ₹10,000 crore have been taken up in the district.
Delivering the Republic Day address at the Torch Light Parade Ground in Bannimantap in Mysuru on January 26, Mr. Mahadevappa, who is also the Minister for Social Welfare, referred to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah launching development projects worth ₹323 crore in Varuna Assembly constituency.
The other development projects listed by Mr. Mahadevappa included the proposed construction of a hospital on the lines of NIMHANS and a de-addiction centre at a cost of ₹100 crore in the district, construction of hostel buildings — eight post-matric hostels in Mysuru city and one pre-matric hostel in Hunsur taluk — at a cost of ₹59.60 crore, besides two post-matric hostel buildings in K. R. Nagar and Saligrama, programmes under various schemes for Scheduled Castes at a cost of ₹50.46 crore, besides construction of B. R. Ambedkar and Babu Jagjivan Ram Bhavans, development of burial and cremation grounds at a cost of ₹33.96 crore.
He said the district is in the forefront of horticulture with ₹18.76 crore spent on State and Centrally sponsored schemes so far.
Efforts were underway to expand the area of crops with GI-tag like Mysuru Mallige (jasmine), Nanjangud Rasabale and Mysuru betel leaf in Mysuru and Nanjangud taluks, and export these crops to foreign countries in co-ordination with Agriculture and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).
Also, the government has decided to expand the jurisdiction of Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) by merging one City Municipal Council, four Town Panchayats and 25 villages under eight gram panchayats adjoining the MCC limits to form the ‘Greater Mysuru City Corporation’, he said while pointing out that a plan had been prepared for the overall development of Mysuru city.
Guarantee schemes
While 10 kg of rice is being provided every month per beneficiary in the district since February 2025, a total of 15,392 candidates had registered for the Yuva Nidhi scheme that provides ₹1,500 per month to unemployed diploma and ₹3,000 per month to degree holders who do not get a job even 180 days after completing their course. So far, a total of ₹35.71 crore has been disbursed under the scheme in Mysuru district, he said.
Under the Gruha Jyothi scheme, which provides free electricity up to 200 units to households, the government incurs an average monthly expenditure of ₹39.06 crore. A total of ₹1,093.73 crore has been spent on the scheme so far, he said.
Under the Shakti scheme that provides free travel to women in State-run KSRTC buses, a total of 38.58 crore free tickets had been issued to women resulting in an expenditure of ₹984.5 crore.
The Gruha Lakshmi scheme, which seeks to economically empower women, has benefited a total of 6,73,050 women, who have received a total of ₹3,096 crore at the rate of ₹2,000 each per month.
Earlier, Mr. Mahadevappa hoisted the national tricolour to signal the start of the 77th Republic Day celebrations, and reviewed a parade by a total of 26 different contingents.
Former Minister and MLA representing Narasimharaja Assembly segment Tanveer Sait presided over the celebrations.
