Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) Managing Director Sarfaraz Ahmad stressed the need for a collective effort to reclaim Hyderabad’s leadership position in urban transit. He said land acquisition for Phase‑2 of the Hyderabad Metro has already begun, while the government has also approved acquisition for additional corridors, which will commence soon.
Recalling Hyderabad’s pioneering role in metro rail development, Mr. Ahmad noted that while the city was among the first to launch a metro project with Phase‑1, its network has remained at 69 km. In contrast, Delhi Metro has since expanded to nearly 400 km, he pointed out. He was addressing staff on the occasion of Republic Day celebrations held at Metro Rail Bhavan here on Monday.
Mr. Ahmad spoke about the future growth and progress of HMRL. He noted that the past year had been particularly eventful, marked by the finalisation of the decision to take over the operations of the 69‑km Phase‑1 metro network.
