The staff at the Central Prison of Parappana Agrahara on Friday recovered 120 gm of tobacco concealed inside three iron balls.

According to the prison officials, the balls were recovered when the staff were cleaning the premises near the 8th barrack of undertrial prisoners.

Preliminary inquiry suggested that the iron balls containing the banned substance were thrown from outside the prison with the intention of supplying them to inmates.

The possession and supply of tobacco inside the prison is prohibited under prison rules and regulations. The seized items were taken into custody as evidence.

Based on the preliminary investigation, a case has been registered under Section 42 and other relevant provisions of the Karnataka Prison (Amendment) Act, 2022.

Legal action has been initiated, and further investigation is under way.

Meanwhile, the officials recovered eight mobile phones and a SIM card during surprise checks in barracks 6 and 7 on Friday.

The officials also caught a woman who bypassed the security checks and handed over ₹22,000 in cash to an undertrial identified as Somashekhar during the visiting hour. The official on suspicion frisked Somashekhar and recovered the cash from him.
