Demanding the reinstatement of the repealed Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), members of the All India Kisan Kheth Mazdoor Sanghatan (AIKKMS) staged a protest outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Yadgir on Tuesday.

The protesters said that the Union government has snatched the right of labour to get jobs under the erstwhile MGNREGA by introducing a new law, VB-G RAM G Act.

The previous Act was brought by the then Prime Minister late Manmohan Singh-led government to ensure jobs for rural people. But the new law has created uncertainty among labour due to its improper and unconstitutional conditions, they claimed.

The Union government, instead of ensuring more job security and wages based on the work allotted to labour, has burdened the State governments by asking them to share 40% from their own funds, adding it to its 60% share, they said.

But this is not only unscientific but is also a drastic move to directly attack the State’s financial condition, they said.

Therefore, the AIKKMS demands that the Union government immediately repeal the VB-G RAM G Act and reinstate the MGNREGA to ensure continuous jobs for the rural people, they said.

Later, they submitted a memorandum to the authorities concerned.
