Organs from a 14-year-old boy from Pambalur, Dindigul district, who was declared brain dead at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) in Tiruchi on Tuesday, helped to save several lives.
According to an official release, the boy, a Class X student, was admitted to the Tiruchi GH in a critical condition with grievous head injuries on January 22 caused in a road accident a few days earlier. Brain death was declared by doctors when the patient did not respond to treatment on January 26.
With counselling and the consent of the bereaved family, arrangements were made to harvest the eyes, pancreas, small intestine, kidneys, liver, and skin tissue from the deceased as per the norms of Tamil Nadu Transplant Authority (TRANSTAN) by doctors at MGMGH.
One kidney each was received by renal patients in Chennai and Tiruchi, while beneficiaries in Madurai received the liver and skin tissue. The pancreas and small intestine were transplanted into a private hospital patient in Chennai. The donor corneas were received by an MGMGH patient, said the release.
The mortal remains of the organ donor were laid to rest with full honours.
