After the encounter of a history-sheeter Alaguraja of Madurai city in Perambalur district on Tuesday, Madurai City Police have beefed up security for the residence of former Corporation zonal chairperson, V.K. Gurusamy at Keeraithurai here.
The police said that armed guards were provided as a precautionary measure as the hurling of country-made bombs on a police escort van transporting a history-sheeter Vellaikali in Perambalur on Saturday belonged to Gurusamy’s rival gang.
The police were also searching for the gangsters belonging to the gangs of Gurusamy and Vellaikali in the city.
“However, we could not find anyone as every one had fled the city,” a police officer said.
The rivalry of Gurusamy and Vellaikali’s relative, Rajapandi, who was also a Corporation zonal chairman, dates back to 2002. The police said that their enmity was over area domination in collection of protection money from rice mills in the city, particularly in Keeraithurai and Anupanadi areas.
Since then, over 20 lives have been lost in both sides. An attempt on life of Gurusamy was made in Bengaluru in 2023.
