The Ramanathapuram District Principal Judge A.K. Mehbub Alikhan conducted a personal inspection here on Tuesday to review the basic amenities and living conditions of migrant sanitation workers employed by Rameswaram Municipality.
A total of 32 migrant workers from 20 families have been hired through private contractors to carry out sanitation work across the Rameswaram municipal limits. Following complaints regarding the lack of basic facilities, the Judge visited their current living quarters—a makeshift, unsafe tin-shed structure located behind the Rameswaram Bus Stand.
During the inspection, Judge Mehbub Alikhan addressed Municipal Health Officer Sankaralingam and the contractor, Netaji, and issued several urgent directives including instructing the authorities to provide secure accommodation equipped with all essential basic amenities for the workers.
Emphasising the right to education, the Judge interacted with the workers and insisted that their children’s schooling must be ensured and specifically directed that 15 children currently residing at the site be enrolled in Anganwadis immediately.
The Judge ordered the municipal administration and the contractor to complete these arrangements within 10 days and further informed the officials that regular follow-up inspections would be conducted to monitor the welfare of these migrant workers.
