At Pallavan Salai in Park Town, there is a resident whose identity remains unknown to their neighbours.

It is baobab tree; and it stands “unchristened” and unknown. A majority of those visiting that space on a regular basis are likely unaware of this tree’s significance. To protect the tree, its history has to be spelt out. It has to be “christened”, its uniqueness shouted from the rooftops. Obviously, that is an overstatement. What can be done is place a “nameboard” with , next to the tree.

The Forest Department has a plan to install plaques next to heritage trees, throwing light on their uniqueness and issuing a warning against acts that endanger them. The list of trees meant for this exercise had been prepared by Nizhal, a non-profit that is associated with tree conservation in Chennai.
