A few districts in south Tamil Nadu are in for heavy rainfall, triggered by two minor weather systems, on November 12 and November 13.
After a lull in the northeast monsoon, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) expects two fresh weather systems, likely to form after November 13, may set off an active phase of monsoon and revive widespread rain across the State.
The RMC has forecast the State will experience scattered rainfall on November 12 and November 13, with prospects of intense rainfall in some districts owing to two prevailing weather systems- an upper air circulation over Central Bay of Bengal and another over north interior T.N. and the neighbourhood.
Officials of the RMC said while ghat areas of Tirunelveli district, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, and Kanniyakumari districts will get intense rainfall on Wednesday, Coimbatore and Nilgiris will also get heavy rainfall along with other districts on Thursday.
In its extended outlook for weather till November 20, the RMC has forecast that a low-pressure area is likely to form over Southwest Bay of Bengal off Sri Lanka coast around November 14 and another upper air cyclonic circulation / low pressure area over South Andaman Sea around November 19.
B. Amudha, Head (Additional in-charge), RMC, said heavy rainfall has been forecast over southern parts of the State because of the weather systems at the middle level of the atmosphere. However, the forecast and rain intensity would change depending on evolving weather dynamics.
The RMC is expecting an active phase of NE monsoon during mid-November after a brief lull. The State may receive relatively more rainfall during the second half of the month owing to fresh weather systems, she said.
The extended outlook also mentioned large-scale features like negative Indian Ocean Dipole and developing La Nina conditions may also contribute to below normal rainfall in several parts of the State till November 20. “We are monitoring weather models on how the fresh weather disturbances will enhance rainfall activity in T.N.,” she added.
During the past 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Monday, a few places in south T.N. and one or two places in northern parts recorded rainfall. Puducherry and Karaikal area experienced dry weather and a similar trend continued till Monday evening with only a few places like Palayamkottai and Kodaikanal registering light rains.
Dry weather and dip in showers have brought down the State’s overall seasonal rainfall from excess to a normal of 25 cm since October 1. Karur Paramathi recorded the hottest temperature of 34.5 degree Celsius, which is five degree Celsius above average, on Monday. Chennai may receive one or two spells of light/moderate rains in some areas on Tuesday.
