The Department of Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare has earned global recognition for its maternal healthcare policy, ‘Midwifery Training Programme’, designed by the department in collaboration with United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and Fernandez Foundation to promote natural deliveries among women.
According to a press release from the department on Saturday (November 29), a Netherlands-based organisation, ‘International Confederation of Midwives’, has selected the A.P. policy as an outstanding model after looking at the analysis of how natural deliveries have increased among women in hospitals after the programme was launched.
Applications were invited by the Netherlands-based organisation seeking details of the best maternal care practices, the Health Department sent the details of the programme three months ago. Among the 6,188 applications that the organisation received, the A.P. policy was lauded and selected as one of the best practices.
In connection with this, the department has been invited to present these details at a workshop to be held in Lisbon, Portugal, from June 14 to 18, 2026, Health and Family Welfare Commissioner G. Veerapandian said.
The midwifery training programme is being offered to selected nurses, who are being trained and educated on the best practices pregnant women should follow. The first batch of nurses has completed the course and another is under way.
Minister for Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare Satya Kumar Yadav appreciated the health officials for their efforts that brought the department laurels from an international organisation.
