An accident victim from Coimbatore gave a new lease of life to others after his family came forward to donate all possible organs.

Multiple organs of N. Shanmugam alias Sathish, 40, from Kuppanur in Coimbatore district were harvested at KG Hospital in Coimbatore on Monday.

Hospital sources said Shamugam suffered grievous injuries when the two-wheeler he rode rammed a bus at Annur in Coimbatore district on November 22. After receiving first aid from a nearby government hospital, he was admitted to KG Hospital on the same day. The man, who suffered a severe head injury, did not respond well to the treatment. A team of doctors declared him brain-dead on Sunday.

The family members of the deceased consented to donate all possible organs when the hospital’s grief counsellor approached them and explained about cadaver organ donation.

Transplant surgeons harvested multiple organs of the deceased as per norms of the Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (Transtan), which controls the transplantation programme and organ sharing in the State. Transtan allotted a liver and both kidneys to KG Hospital, where they were transplanted on needy patients. Corneas of the deceased were allotted to Sankara Eye Hospital.
