An accused, Mariyaraj, 40, inflicted cut injuries on hands of two policemen, Vinod Kumar and Alex Pandian, and also attempted to cut his throat with a penknife, while being taken on a motorbike near Srivilliputtur, on Friday.
The police said that Mariyaraj of Vadapatti near Sivakasi had an arrest warrant pending against him in a woman harassment case in Malli police station.
Two policemen, Vinod Kumar from Srivilliputtur Taluk police station and Alex Pandian, from Krishnankoil police station, had arrested him from his work place near Sivakasi.
The policemen made him sit in the middle on a motorbike and were proceeding on the Sivakasi-Srivilliputtur highway, when the man stealthily pulled out a penknife and slashed the hands of the policemen.
After the bike was stopped, the man tried to cut his throat with the knife.
However, the policemen overpowered him and prevented him. By, then he had slashed his throat.
The policemen then took him to Government hospital in Srivilliputtur on the bike.
The police said that Alex Pandian had sustained minor injury. Vinod Kumar and Mariyaraj were admitted at the hospital.
Later, Mariyaraj was referred to the Virudhunagar Government Medical College hospital.
