Alleging a lack of effective action to shut down the operations of the Ambayathode-based poultry waste rendering plant, the recently reconstituted local action committee will organise an all-party mass rally in Thamarassery on Tuesday (November 11). The committee leaders said the rally will be peaceful and will demonstrate the “true strength” of the protests.
“The rally, to be taken out from Karadi to the Thamarassery bus stand, is expected to see the participation of over 3,000 residents. We are organising it as the factory owners continue operations with police protection, disregarding public concerns,” said Thampi Parakandathil, chief patron of the action committee. He alleged that foul odour from the plant has once again caused air pollution across four panchayats.
Committee members Gireesh John and Gireesh Thevally also voiced strong objections to the ongoing “door-to-door” police searches to trace those allegedly involved in the recent protest near the plant, which ended in clashes, arson, and the vandalism of around 15 vehicles.
The factory had been shut down on October 21 following the ‘violence’ triggered by a section of the protesters. Over 300 people have been booked under various serious charges of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. A special investigation team led by Deputy Inspector General of Police Yathish Chandra is probing the incident.
The plant resumed operations on November 8 after the District-level Facilitation Committee, based on a field inspection report, permitted reopening. In response to public complaints, the plant’s treatment capacity has been reduced from 25 tonnes to 20 tonnes per day. The prohibitory order earlier imposed by District Collector Snehil Kumar Singh to prevent law and order issues has been extended to November 13.
