The scenic Adavinainarkovil Dam at Maekkarai, the second largest reservoir of Tenkasi district having a total storage capacity of 132.22 feet, overflowed on Thursday for the fourth time since June, much to the jubilation of the farming community of the district.
Consequently, 60 cusecs of surplus water flowing into the dam was discharged through Mettukkaal and Karisalkaal channels to irrigation tanks getting water from the dam.
However, the 85-foot-deep Gadananadhi Dam, the largest reservoir of Tenkasi district with 428.52 mcft capacity, now has only 101.50 mcft water. Similarly, Ramanadhi Dam, the district’s third largest dam, has water at only 65 mcft against the total capacity of 152 mcft.
“We expect more rain in the days to come, especially in November as northeast monsoon intensifies,” says farmer and CPI functionary S.T. Shaik Maideen of Vadakarai.
Meanwhile, Manimuthar Dam in Tirunelveli district, having the maximum storage level of 118 feet with 5,511 mcft capacity to be the largest reservoir of the district, crossed the 100 feet mark on Wednesday. The water level stood at 101.45 feet on Thursday. The dam now has 3,915 mcft (71.06%) water storage.
