The Andhra Pradesh State Advocates’ Association (APSAA) and Bezawada Bar Association (BBA) condemned what they termed as the ‘fake encounter’ of Maoist leader Madvi Hidma, saying that the circumstances under which he died were raising many doubts.

Following the call by Union Home Minister Amit Shah to the Maoists to surrender, several members of the banned outfit, including in Andhra Pradesh, have given up arms.

“The government should order a probe by a sitting judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court to bring the facts to light,” APSAA president A.K. Basha said.

Addressing the media here on Saturday, Mr. Basha said there were suspicions that the police took Hidma into custody from a hospital in Vijayawada, where he was undergoing treatment on November 15.

S. Balan, a noted lawyer and human rights leader from Karnataka, said what happened to the Maoists ‘amounted to murder’, and that whoever was involved in the incident was liable to punishment.

Advocate Pichuka Srinivas termed the encounter as ‘a clear violation of human rights’ and stressed the need for a fact-finding committee.

Advocates and human rights activists V. Ravindranath, Satish Babu, A.S.S. Ramprasad and T. Anjaneyulu also spoke on the issue.
