At the Tambaram Corporation Council meeting held last week, AIADMK councillors held a symbolic protest dressed in black clothes and wrapped in mosquito nets while carrying stuffed toys of dogs, cattle, and pigs. The demonstration was meant to draw attention to the unchecked breeding of mosquitoes and stray animal menace and poor sanitation in the area, which they said reflected the civic body’s inadequate measures to curb the problems.
Nine councillors from the AIADMK and one from its ally Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar), participated in the protest.
Selaiyur G. Shankar, AIADMK councillor from ward 65, said: “The Corporation allocated funds to curb this mosquito and stray dog menace in the past Council Meetings but the resolutions are not fulfilled. Through this mosquito wrap and toy model protest, we hope the problem is given due attention.”
Jeganathan V., AIADMK Councillor representing ward 5, who protested at the meet said there had been no spraying in his ward for the past six months, and with the onset of the monsoon, breeding of mosquitoes had risen.
“The garbage collection has been irregular especially near railway stations and so on, which is worsening the mosquito problem,” added AIADMK ward 47 councillor C. Sai Ganesh. He added that the stray pig menace is also at an all-time high, posing serious health risks, and called for heavy fines on cattle owners who let their animals roam the roads.
