The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has requested the Lieutenant Governor and Chief Minister to take administrative measures for timely distribution of monthly free rice to ration card holders in the Union Territory.
Addressing a press conference here, party secretary A. Anbalagan said the AIADMK had appreciated the government for renewing free rice distribution scheme in the Union Territory. But the scheme has not benefited card holders due to delay in distribution and complaints about quality of rice supplied, he said.
“Since the scheme was renewed, rice was not distributed every month. Around 5,000 tonnes of rice was required for distribution to around 3.69 lakh ration card holders in the Union Territory. As the rice was not distributed on time, many are not availing the benefit leading to sale of the rice. Of late, people have also started complaining about the quality of rice being supplied,” he said.
The Lt. Governor and Chief Minister should ensure that the rice was distributed to card holders every month, he said adding that in the event of the government not being able to maintain proper schedule for distribution, they should revert to the Direct Benefit Transfer mode. The government should transfer ₹1,000 to the bank accounts of red ration card holders and ₹500 to yellow card holders every month, he said.
He also urged the Election Department to ensure that no genuine voter was left out of the electoral roll during the Special Intensive Revision exercise. The Booth Level Officers should make house-to-house visits to ensure accuracy. The digitisation of around 58% of enumeration forms has been completed in the region, he said.
