AIADMK’s stand on special intensive revision of voters’ list was not that of the people of Tamil Nadu, said Madurai MP Su. Venkatesan.

Addressing reporters here on Tuesday, the CPI (M) MP said the entire opposition parties of the country were vehemently opposing the new initiative of the Election Commission of India (ECI).

“The very foundation of democracy is the election. And the electoral roll revision is like the heart of election. The ECI has not answered any of the questions raised on the issue till date,” Mr. Venkatesan said.

Despite removal of three lakh Muslim voters from the electoral rolls in Bihar, preparations for the State Assembly election were under way. Similarly, a lot of people had been added to the voters’ list with fake addresses.

“When such things are being conspired, it is the duty of the ECI to prevent them. However, the Commission is only encouraging such irregularities,” he alleged.

Mr. Venkatesan said the SIR was a direct fallout of the manner in which the appointment of the Election Commissioners was made, leaving out the Chief Justice of India.

“This has made the ECI a puppet in the hands of the BJP, which had a motive to keep the CJI away from the appointment process. Now, the AIADMK has a motive to welcome the BJP activity,” he added.

The demand of the opposition on the SIR was not to favour any political party but to save democracy. “The ECI was now damaging the very process of inclusion and deletion of voters from the voters’ list,” he added.
