Demanding safety for women and speedy action against the perpetrators in Coimbatore gang rape case, members of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) staged a protest here on Wednesday.

S.K. Ponnuthai, AIDWA State secretary, said though the suspects were arrested, the State should ensure that they did not get bail from the court.

“Unlike other cases, the Police Department must complete the investigation early for speedy and rightful justice,” she added. They should also make sure that the charge sheet was strong enough for stricter punishment.

The survivor and her male friend should also receive the best treatment and protection for early recovery and they should be safeguarded from any unforeseeable threats, she noted.

Condemning society for defaming the girl for staying late at night with her male friend, former CPI(M) MLA K. Balabharathi, who headed the protest, said, “Nobody has the right to question the moral value of a girl and to be precise, it is the democratic right of the girl to move freely at her wish.”

Moreover, those who slut-shamed the girl for exercising her right and choice should introspect their own upbringing and moral values first, she contended.

By blaming the victim, society would not evolve or change for the betterment of the women, instead, it was everyone’s duty to think of themselves and their duty for creating a safe and secure society.

To prevent occurrence of such incidents in future, she said, police patrolling and deployment of police teams in necessary areas should be increased.

“In addition, CCTV cameras should be installed at the maximum number of areas possible to ensure monitoring of secluded areas,” she added.
