Members of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) and the Democratic Youth Federation of India staged a protest outside the All Women Police Station at Crime Branch here on Monday, demanding immediate arrest of the teachers booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012.
T. Selvaraj, district president, DYFI, said though the schoolchildren made sexual harassment complaints against the teacher, head and the assistant head of the school, the police did not arrest them.
“How can the police not arrest the teachers even after slapping the POCSO charges against them? If it is a trivial matter, arrest will not be a mandatory action, but, since it is a grave crime against minors, will it not compromise evidence?,” he asked.
More girl students were studying in the school, and how could the police assure that others would not be affected, he further asked.
The protesters demanded a judge-led inquiry commission to probe the matter as they suspected that politicians were involved in the crime. “Also, protection should be given to the victims and their families to safeguard them from the accused,” they added.
The protesters were detained by the police and later released in the evening.
