Responding to a State-wide call given by the State Committee of the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS), the Kalaburagi district unit staged a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Kalaburagi recently.

Farmers demanded immediate the intervention of the State government in a series of issues affecting agriculturists.

After the demonstration, AIKS leaders submitted a memorandum addressed to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah through the Deputy Commissioner’s office.

State Working President of AIKS Maula Mulla, district president Bhimashankar Madiyal, district secretary Mohammad Chaudhari and several others participated in the protest.

Speaking to reporters, district president Bhimashankar Madiyal said that heavy rain has devastated both commercial and food crops across several districts and the State government must not delay compensation any further.

“The State must immediately publish village-wise lists of damaged crops and the compensation due to farmers. We want transparency and we want timely payment,” he said.

He also criticised the delay in opening procurement centres, saying farmers are being pushed into distress sales.

“Harvesting is already over. Without functional procurement centres, private traders are exploiting helpless farmers. The State government must start procurement operations at once,” he added.

Raising concern over large tracts of land acquired for industrial, residential and infrastructure projects remaining unused even after several years, Mr. Madiyal demanded that land not utilised for the stipulated purpose within five years of acquisition be either returned to the original owners or allotted to eligible landless families.

The memorandum submitted by the AIKS highlighted several other demands. It urged the State government to expedite the regularisation of bagair hukum land, noting that lakhs of applications are pending due to administrative indifference. Many landless cultivators, it said, continue to live in uncertainty without ownership rights.

Reiterating its long-standing demand for a comprehensive crop loan waiver, the organisation said that the repeated cycles of drought, excessive rainfall and inadequate support prices have trapped farmers in unsustainable debt.

The AIKS leaders urged the State government to take these issues seriously and initiate immediate action, stating that the survival of thousands of farming families depends on timely intervention.
