The All India Muslim Personal Law Board on Wednesday stated that they have requested an meeting with Minister of State for Minority Affairs George Kurian to convey concerns over technical glitches on the Union government’s UMEED waqf portal.
AIMPLB spokesperson S.Q.R. Ilyas cited reports from across the country that the portal was inaccessible, slow and riddled with errors for those trying to register and upload documents. He said the board intends to brief the Minister on these issues and request an extension of the deadline.
In a statement released to the media, he explained that mutawallis across several States reported that the portal had been slowing down, frequently crashing and at times becoming completely unresponsive, making it nearly impossible to upload lakhs of property records within the given time frame.
The Board said its general secretary, Maulana Muhammad Fazlur Rahim Mujaddidi, had e-mailed the Minister, noting that while the government has directed all registered waqf properties to be uploaded, the portal’s technical issues have made compliance difficult.
It added that with more than eight lakh properties nationwide, the timeframe given is far too short. The board said that if a meeting is granted, its delegation will include the central leadership as well as representatives of major religious and community bodies.
In a separate development, officials of the Telangana government told The Hindu that with the Supreme Court refusing to entertain a clutch of petitions over the UMEED portal, the Telangana State Waqf Board and mutawallis of waqf institutions have been trying to registered and upload documents connected to the over 33,000 waqf institutions. However, the several thousand unregistered waqf properties existing in the State poses a challenge. They said that if these are not registered on time, then mutawallis and managing committees of such institutions would have to move the Waqf Tribunal.
