Members of the Tiruchi District Local Body Workers Union, affiliated to the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), staged a protest in front of the Manapparai Municipality office on Wednesday, urging the State government to immediately disburse a special COVID-19 incentive promised to sanitation workers.

The demonstration was led by branch secretary A. Arunagiri. Speakers at the meeting, included AITUC district deputy secretary Mohamed Hussain, Transport Corporation branch president Saravanan, and Communist Party of India town secretary Thangaraj.

Protesters raised a set of demands, including prompt payment of the special COVID-19 incentive, supply of quality personal protective equipment, and implementation of minimum wages as per Government Order No. 62. They also called for payment of the ₹708 daily wage fixed by the District Collector for outsourced workers, provision of weekly offs, and regularisation of contract employees who have completed three years of service.

The union warned it would intensify its agitation if authorities did not respond to the demands within a stipulated time. Officials from the municipality did not comment.
