The CPI-affiliated All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) in Puducherry reaffirmed its rejection of the Union government’s “pro-corporate and anti-labour” policies as part of its 106th Foundation Day activities.

CPI national executive member and State Secretary A.M. Saleem hoisted the AITUC flag in the presence of AITUC State president Dinesh Ponnaiah, and K. Sethu Selvam, general secretary, Nara. Kalainathan, former MLA, Ramamoorthy and Geethanathan, office-bearers of the All India Agricultural Workers Union and other AITUC leaders.

The AITUC marked the observance by reiterating its opposition to the draft labour policy of the Ministry of Labour and Employment of the NDA government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The AITUC said the draft labour policy, ‘Shram Shakti Nidhi 2025,’ was issued as a unilateral measure by the BJP government in a blatant violation of the established tripartite process.

Holding the move “deeply disturbing and undemocratic” and a betrayal of the working class, the AITUC urged the Union Ministry of Labour to immediately withdraw the draft and initiate consultations with stakeholders.

Pointing out that it was a standard and important practice established in India to consult with the Central trade unions before drafting such a policy, the AITUC said such a practice alone would ensure the legitimacy and effectiveness of the draft policy. “Consultation with trade unions is not an option or a formality; it is a cornerstone of good labour policy”, the AITUC said.

The AITUC also strongly opposed “the myth of universal social security” constructed by the Labour Ministry. Welfare schemes do not create social security. Minimum wages and social security should be provided as legal rights to every worker, including unorganised sector workers, daily wage workers, temporary workers, contract workers, agricultural workers and those in other segments and this should be ensured through rigorous inspections, it said.
