Minister for Higher Education Govi. Chezhiaan inaugurated on Saturday the alumni association of Rani Anna Government College for Women in Pettai on Tirunelveli outskirts.
The alumni association which will work for the betterment of the college by creating more infrastructure with their contribution and through the sponsors, will also act as a bridge between the college and the institutes of higher education, institutes offering employable skill development programmes and the companies for placement of students etc. The college which was started in 1970 with 69 students now has over 4,000 students pursuing their graduation in 15 course, post graduation in 13 programmes and researches in 10 fields.
Addressing the meeting, Mr. Chezhiaan said Tamil Nadu was imparting a range of employable skills to the college students through âNaan Mudhalvanâ scheme besides giving monthly assistance of âč1,000 to each student. On its part, the college administration should identify its old students occupying enviable positions in the government and the public sector companies to train the present students so that they would also get the employable skills and get placed in leading companies and crack competitive examinations to enter government departments.
The Minister appealed to the students to be aware of the adverse impact of drug abuse and keep themselves away from drugs and alcohol.
Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker M. Appavu said the students of the college and the college administration should make use of the alumni association for strengthening infrastructure and identifying the right career for the students.
âAs the Tamil Nadu Government is giving a range of assistance for the girl students, they should avail these assistances and work hard to come up in life,â Mr. Appavu said.
The Minister and the Speaker later inspected the studentsâ hostel and chaired a meeting with the heads of various colleges in this region to review the studentsâ academic performance over the past three years, studentsâ admission in their colleges, infrastructure in the college, the implementation of âNaan Mudhalvanâ, âPuthumai Pennâ and âThamizh Puthalvanâ schemes etc.
District Collector R. Sukumar, Mayor G. Ramakrishnan, Palayamkottai MLA M. Abdul Wahab and Deputy Mayor K. R. Raju were present.
