An attempt to murder case has been registered by Srirangam police against R. Satishkumar, 26, prime accused in the killing of a man inside the police quarters at Marshingpet here, for allegedly assaulting two police personnel with a sword when they tried to apprehend him on Monday night prompting an Inspector to open one round of fire on the right knee of Satishkumar.

Satishkumar was admitted at Mahatma Gandhi Government Headquarters Hospital at Tiruchi. The two constables, Mathavaraj and George Williams, were admitted to the Government Hospital at Srirangam.

An armed gang led by Satishkumar had hacked to death P. Thamaraiselvan, 26, inside the police quarters on Monday morning. Palakkarai police registered a case of murder naming Satishkumar, Prabhakaran, Ganesan, Nandhakumar and Elamaran as accused. Elamaran was caught at the spot and subsequently arrested.

Acting on a tip off, a police team led by Srirangam Inspector of Police rushed to Kollidakarai near the second water tank in Srirangam and tried to secure Satishkumar on Monday night. Satishkumar is alleged to have assaulted two police personnel with a sword and attempted to assault the Inspector as well. This forced the Inspector to open one round of fire using his service pistol on the right knee of Satishkumar in self-defence and secure the accused, police sources said.

The two constables sustained cut injuries on their forearms. The Srirangam police booked an attempt to murder case against Satishkumar on Monday night on a complaint from the Inspector, the sources added.

Meanwhile, the body of Thamaraiselvan was handed over to his family members on Tuesday after autopsy.
