A Visakhapatnam-based woman was arrested along with four others for allegedly trying to sell her seven-day-old baby boy to a childless couple for ₹5 lakh through mediators in Karimnagar.

According to the police, the woman identified as Sai Sri, 23, gave birth to the baby boy at a hospital in Hyderabad on November 14. Taking advantage of Sai Sri’s ‘strained relationship’ with her husband, her friends Abinav and Heena in Hyderabad allegedly convinced her to sell her baby to an issueless couple citing her ‘financial difficulties’.

They allegedly fixed a deal to sell the baby for ₹5 lakh through their associates Pallavi and Bhavani, both ‘mediators’, and arrived in Karimnagar on November 20.

An argument ensued between the mediators and the childless couple over payment of commission to the brokers near a private hospital. Suspecting something fishy, an autorickshaw driver alerted the police by calling ‘Dial 100’.

A police team rushed to the spot and rescued the baby from the accused. The police seized ₹5 lakh cash and arrested five persons including Sai Sri, the baby’s mother.

A case has been registered and further investigation is on.
