Awareness meet on warehouse maintenance conducted for farmers and traders in Thoothukudi

The Institute of Cooperative Management (ICM), Madurai in partnership with Thoothukudi district cooperative union organised an awareness programme for warehouse maintenance for farmers and traders and millers on Tuesday.

The event aimed to enhance knowledge and best practices related to better storage of agricultural produce using scientific methods.

Inaugurating the programme, R. Ramakrishnan, deputy registrar, Kovilpatti circle, cooperative societies, emphasised the importance of storing harvests in accredited godowns operated by Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS). He added that the proper storage of agricultural products not only preserve the crop quality but also help farmers to prevent post-harvest losses and safeguard themselves from price fluctuations and market volatility.

He urged the farmers to adopt approved storage systems to secure better financial returns and long-term benefits.

Speaking at the event K. Sathia Kumar Sam Michael, director, ICM Madurai explained methods to minimise post harvest losses through scientific storage techniques.

He discussed the challenges of panic selling and highlighted the benefits of digital trade platforms such as e-NAM and e-NWR, which enable transparent pricing and fair market access.

The initiative by ICM aims to empower the farming community and trading sector with essential knowledge and tools to enhance storage standards, improve income stability and promote sustainable agricultural practices.

Farmers, traders from Thoothukudi district and other officials were present at the event.
