The Mayiladuthurai District Judiciary on Sunday organised an awareness programme on gender equity, gender equality, women’s empowerment, and prevention of sexual harassment at the workplace. The event was inaugurated by Justice K.K. Ramakrishnan, Judge, Madras High Court, who oversees the administrative functions of the district judiciary.

Superintendent of Police G. Stalin spoke about the strong presence of women in Sangam literature and the relative invisibility of women scientists in public memory.

In his welcome address, District Judge L.S. Sathiyamurthy outlined the role of the Gender Sensitisation and Internal Complaints Committee (GSICC) and the safety measures implemented on district court premises, noting that complaints of workplace harassment had not been reported so far.

S. Suguna of Lady Doak College, Madurai, spoke on gender relations, discrimination and workplace harassment, describing rising incidents as rooted in masculine prejudice. Senior advocate R. Gandhi detailed the legal framework protecting women at work while S. Selva Gomathi, Managing Trustee of the Justice Shivraj Patil Foundation, explained grievance redress mechanisms. Sami Krishnamoorthy illustrated workplace do’s and don’ts through Tamil literary references.

Among the participants were police personnel, PWD engineers, and Revenue department staff, members of the judiciary, lawyers, government advocates, and students and faculty of AVC College.
