The Marine Police have seized ₹71 lakh-worth beedi leaves even as it was about to be smuggled to Sri Lanka by boat in the early hours of Saturday.
When the marine police, led by Inspector Petchimuthu, were patrolling along Terespuram beach in the small hours of Saturday following information about beedi leaf smuggling, they spotted a mini lorry at 4.30 a.m. Even as four persons were unloading beedi leaf bundles from the mini cargo vehicle, the police surrounded the lorry. After abandoning the bundles, the four persons escaped.
The police seized the 2,835 kg of beedi leaves packed in 81 bundles.
Further investigations are on to nab the culprits.
