Higher Education Minister R. Bindu has emphasised that students should not be assigned duties related to the collection and digitisation of electoral list data as part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in a manner that disrupts their academic activities.

In a statement, she pointed out that students take part in extracurricular and community service activities only according to schedules that ensure no interference with regular studies. However, teachers have expressed concern over deploying students for a major responsibility like updating the electoral rolls by reallocating their study hours, she added.

Parents too fear that the seriousness and workload involved in voter-list preparation could create undue pressure on students and adversely affect their academic performance, Dr. Bindu cautioned.
