Industries department will set up a biodiversity park at the mined-out area of Kerala Clays and Ceramic Products Limited (KCCPL) in Kannur to restore native ecology and promote environmental awareness. The biodiversity park will be set up at an estimated cost of ₹13.2 crore, as per an order issued on November 18. The State government had in August accorded administrative sanction for the project.

The government has now constituted a technical sanction committee headed by the Principal Secretary, Industries department, in connection with the implementation of the project. Earlier this year, the State Cabinet had approved an increase in the company’s authorised capital from ₹4 crore to ₹30 crore to strengthen its future operations, in recognition of the public sector undertaking’s operational excellence despite various challenges.

Back in 2015, the government decided to put an end to the mining activities at the China clay mining unit of the KCCPL on the Madayippara hillock due to environmental issues. The area had witnessed strong protests since 1992 as it is a biodiversity hotspot.
