Officials of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) conducted raid on a private workshop in Vijayawada and seized a fake hallmarking machine used to imprint counterfeit BIS hallmarks.

The team, led by Director and Head of BIS, Vijayawada, Prem Sajani Patnala, conducted raid on a workshop located at One Town, on Monday. They seized a fake machine, along with a laptop and gold ornaments that were being sold with fake hallmarking at Ammanna Gold Jewellers.

The gold shop owner, meanwhile, was selling jewellery with fake BIS hallmarking, in violation of the mandatory hallmarking provisions under BIS Act, 2016, said Joint Director T. Arjun.

“Action will be taken against the shop owner under Section 29 of the BIS Act, 2016, which stipulates imprisonment up to one year or fine not less than ₹1 lakh. The fine may extend up to five times the value of goods involved in the violation,” said Deputy Director D. Vivek Reddy, who participated in the operation.

Stern action will be taken against those who violate the BIS hallmarking rules. Public are requested to use BIS Care App, which is available on Google Play Store and Apple App Store, to verify the certification details, Ms. Prem Sajani said.
