The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) organised a 2.5 km ‘Run for Quality – Strive for Standards’ run in Coimbatore on Saturday (November 1, 2025) as a part of the World Standards Day 2025 celebrations.
Over 700 people, including students, professionals, and fitness enthusiasts, took part in the run in Race Course. The aim was to improve awareness about standards, quality, and safety in everyday life apart from highlighting the role of standardisation and certification in ensuring consumer protection and supporting industrial growth.
Sanket Balwant Waghe, Additional Collector (DRDA), Coimbatore, who flagged off the run along with G. Bhavani, head of the BIS – Coimbatore, highlighted the crucial role of standards in promoting sustainable development, consumer confidence, and innovation. A zumba warm-up session was also held. All the participants received medals and certificates.
At a stakeholders’ meeting held recently by the BIS in Coimbatore on “Requirements and recommendations for template/format of hospital bills,” which is in draft stage, the speakers said that inconsistent and non-transparent hospital billing practices have long been a source of confusion and disputes between patients and healthcare providers.
The absence of a uniform billing structure results in lack of clarity on charges, lack of comparability across hospitals, and difficulties in auditing and reimbursement. The standard aims to bring uniformity, transparency, and accountability in the billing practices of healthcare organisations across India.
It will prescribe the mandatory and optional elements to be included in hospital bills issued by all types of healthcare organisations — including hospitals, nursing homes, diagnostic centres, and outpatient clinics, a prss release from the BIS said.
