Raitha Morcha, the farmers’ unit of the Shivamogga district BJP, staged a protest here on November 28, alleging that the State government had failed to protect the interests of farmers in the district.
Party workers and leaders took out a march from Gopi Circle to the Deputy Commissioner’s office, where they staged a dharna. The traffic on the road in front of the office was affected owing to the protest.
Addressing the gathering, party leaders said that farmers have not been getting quality power for their crops, and that many have lost their pump sets owing to low voltage. Areca growers have been suffering because of various diseases affecting their crops, while paddy, jowar, and ragi growers have not been getting suitable prices for their crops.
Further, owing to the human-elephant conflict, farmers in many parts of the district have been finding it difficult to protect their crops. The government has delayed distributing compensation for the crop loss caused by wild animals. They urged the government to procure maize from growers at the minimum support price.
Former BJP district president T.D. Megharaj, addressing the protesters, said that those holding power in the State were not concerned about farmers’ problems as they have been busy purchasing MLAs.
District BJP Raitha Morcha president Siddalingappa, district BJP president N.K. Jagadish, and others led the protest.
