In the wake of the gang-rape of a 20-year-old college student on a deserted area near Coimbatore airport, residents of the adjacent Brindhavan Nagar, where a few families helped the survivor after she escaped from the perpetrators, are planning to install more surveillance cameras.
Located close to the airport and Avinashi Road, Brindhavan Nagar is a populated residential area, where several police and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel are also residing.
“The crime that took place in the vacant land near our residential area was shocking to all of us. Safety of residents and people passing through the locality is paramount to us. The residents’ association will increase the number of road-facing surveillance cameras for the same,” said N. Subramanian, president of the association.

According to him, the mud road connecting Brindhavan Nagar and SIHS Colony is used by hundreds of people every day. The road is passing through vacant government lands and private lands.
“We have petitioned the authorities multiple times for the provision of a tar-topped road with street lights. Crimes and anti-social activities happening in the open vacant lands will end only if there is a proper road with street lights. Night patrols by police were also needed,” he said.

Mr. Subramanian added that the residents’ association will fix a camera facing the mud road to SIHS Colony and other entry and exit points of the locality for crime prevention.
During the investigation of the gang-rape, the police attempted to collect footages from all road-facing surveillance cameras in the locality, to look for the suspects. However, many were found defunct or lacking clarity due to accumulation of dirt, according to an officer.
