An unidentified person broke open the house of a retired college professor at Ganapathi Nagar on Nasiyanur Road in the city and decamped with 40 sovereigns of gold jewellery and ₹7 lakh on Friday.
The incident took place when Subbulakshmi (70) was sleeping on the ground floor, while the burglar gained entry into the first floor through the back door. On Friday morning, she found the household articles scattered and all the almirahs in the house broken open. She immediately alerted the Erode North police.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the burglar, wearing a mask and gloves, had entered the house around midnight through the first floor. CCTV footage from the neighbourhood showed the masked intruder surveying the house before entering. Based on the visuals, the police have intensified the search. A sniffer dog and fingerprint experts were pressed into service.
It may be recalled that on August 5, 2023, a man entered the rear side of the same house in broad daylight and decamped with 150 sovereigns of gold jewellery. The case was solved with the arrest of Anil Kumar of Andhra Pradesh.
