The Special SC/ST Court in Nedumangad on Monday (December 8, 2025) granted bail to C.N. Vijayakumari, Dean of the Faculty of Oriental Studies, Head of the Sanskrit Department, Kerala University, who has been accused of making casteist remarks against a research scholar.
The court approved the bail with strict conditions. She has been directed to appear before the investigation officer on three Sundays. The court also directed that she should not attempt to influence witnesses and must ensure that no similar incidents occur in the future.
The defence had earlier accepted the court’s direction that the accused appear in person and secure bail. They informed the court that Dr. Vijayakumari would present herself on Monday.
The decision was announced after hearing arguments from the complainant Vipin Vijayan. The defence argued that the complaint was prompted by anger over criticism of his research thesis as well as political motives.
The Sreekaryam police had registered the case against the Dean under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act based on Mr. Vijayan’s complaint.
