The electoral race in Eloor municipality has reached its final lap.

The ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) is hopeful of overcoming a possible anti-incumbency threat after being in power since 2015.

An industrial town with a host of issues that include air and water pollution, the civic body is expected to witness a keen contest this time as the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) has tried its best to quell factionalism, which had marred its chances of coming to power for long. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which had won six seats in 2020, is looking to better its tally in the 32-member civic body.

A.D. Sujil, outgoing chairperson, said the LDF was able to ensure basic infrastructure development across wards over the past five years. “We have also been able to register progress in the industrial and agricultural sectors,” he added.

P.M. Ayoob, UDF Parliamentary Party leader, said the front was able to claim an upper hand in campaigning after ensuring that the seat-sharing process was completed without any differences of opinion. The Opposition is highlighting the ruling front’s unkept promises and lack of development, he added.

K.R. Krishnaprasad of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who represented the Headquarters ward in the present council, alleged that the Left rule had claimed ownership for projects that were funded by the Centre.

The LDF was able to retain power in Eloor in the elections held in 2020 after it won 18 seats. The rebel menace had impacted the UDF’s performance as it could win only seven seats. The NDA expanded its strength after its representation went up from two in 2015 to six seats in 2020.
